Support the Friends of the VBJDRC by Volunteering

Virtually all of the programs run by The Friends of the VBJDRC depend solely on volunteers for their time, and community support for ongoing financial needs. Please read the many volunteer opportunity descriptions and then use the form below to start the Volunteer application process.

Volunteers must have no criminal record and no cases pending before the Virginia Beach Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court or charges pending before any court.
Volunteers must be at least 25 years of age for all volunteer positions except interns who must be 21 years of age.

Background checks must be complete prior to your volunteer orientation

Volunteer Position Descriptions

MENTORS - Community Allies Program seeks to unite children ages 12 to 17 with adult mentors who are active participants in community organizations. Mentors will include child in the activity ( i.e. sports, theater, or hobbies, bowling) providing transportation, encouragement and support. Commitment: 3 to 4 hours per week.

COURT ASSISTANTS - Assist the Judge during court hearings, record summary information, complete forms and escort families to the probation department. COMMITMENT: One day per week from 8:30 to 2:00.

INFORMATION DESK - Give information and directions to the public in the court lobby. COMMITMENT: One day per week from 8:00 to 11:00 am. We also have a project for a volunteer surrounding this volunteer job. See attachment.

CHILDREN'S CORNER - Supervise children whose parents are in the courtroom, model good child caring skills. COMMITMENT: One day per week from 9:00 to 1:00. We also have a project surrounding this volunteer job. See attachment.

SCHOOL RECORD CHECKERS - Go to various schools and check school records for children who are before the court COMMITMENT: Three hours per week, time flexible but during school hours.

FAMILY ADVOCACY NETWORK SERVICES - Contact victims of family violence to provide information, support, referrals, and court companionship. COMMITMENT: One or two mornings per week.

ASSISTANT VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR - Maintain monthly reports, volunteer files, arrange and conduct tours of juvenile facilities. Need someone with computer skills to help with new software program for volunteer coordinators! COMMITMENT: One half day per week minimum.

INTERNS - Must be a senior in a degree program or graduate level. TIME COMMITMENT: per school's requirement. (We have competition for a VERY few interns each year, please apply early).

RESEARCH ASSISTANT - Compile and analyze data for reporting to the judiciary. All research projects must be approved at the state level and require at least two months lead time.

FRIEND'S BOARD MEMBER - Assist in the development of new programs to support the court and the court service unit. Participate in fund raising to support existing and new programs.

DESIGN A VOLUNTEER JOB - If you have an idea for using your particular skills, please call me for an appointment to discuss it!

EMERGENCY DUTY PROBATION AIDE - Meet with families at the court who are referred to other programs during the court hearing; clarify the court order; and complete various releases and forms needed. COMMITMENT: one morning per week from 8:30 to 1:00.

CHINS PROBATION AIDE - 4 to 8 hours each week working with juveniles to problem solve and think productively about their relationship to society. We call these sessions, the Think Tank. Exercises and training provided.
